ESCT Calculator NZ — Employer KiwiSaver Contribution Tax
ESCT (Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax) is deducted from an employer's own cash contribution to an employee's KiwiSaver, before that money lands in the employee's account. Enter a salary and employer contribution rate below to see the exact ESCT rate applied, how much is withheld, and what actually reaches the employee's KiwiSaver.
Current ESCT Rate Bands (2026/27)
The ESCT rate is determined by the employee's ESCT rate threshold amount, generally their gross salary or wages plus the employer's cash super contributions. These bands took effect on 1 April 2025 and remain current.
| ESCT rate threshold amount | ESCT rate |
|---|---|
| $0 – $18,720 | 10.5% |
| $18,721 – $64,200 | 17.5% |
| $64,201 – $93,720 | 30% |
| $93,721 – $216,000 | 33% |
| $216,001 and above | 39% |
How ESCT Is Worked Out
ESCT applies only to the employer's cash contribution to KiwiSaver or another complying fund, not to the employee's own contribution. The rate an employer applies depends on the employee's situation:
- Employee worked the full previous tax year (1 April to 31 March): the employer uses that employee's actual salary and employer contributions from the prior year to find the threshold amount.
- New employee, or one who didn't work the full prior year: the employer estimates the current year's salary and contributions instead, and sets the rate accordingly for the year.
The rate is generally set once at the start of the tax year (or the start of employment) and is not automatically adjusted mid year if the employee's pay changes, though an employee or Inland Revenue can request a higher rate be applied.
Worked Example
An employee earning $80,000 a year has an employment agreement with a 3.5% employer KiwiSaver contribution. Their ESCT rate threshold amount is $80,000 + $2,800 (the gross employer contribution) = $82,800, which falls in the 30% band. ESCT of $840 is deducted from the $2,800 gross contribution, meaning $1,960 actually reaches their KiwiSaver account for the year. ESCT vs PAYE: What's the Difference?

| Who it reduces | The employee's take-home pay | The amount reaching the employee's KiwiSaver |
| Rate structure | Progressive brackets, 10.5% to 39% | Single flat rate per employee, 10.5% to 39% |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ESCT in New Zealand?
ESCT (Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax) is the tax an employer deducts from its own cash contributions to an employee's KiwiSaver or other complying superannuation fund, before that money reaches the employee's account. It is withheld and paid to Inland Revenue by the employer, not the employee.
What are the current ESCT rates in New Zealand?
As of the 2026/27 tax year, ESCT rates range from 10.5% to 39%, based on the employee's ESCT rate threshold amount: 10.5% up to $18,720, 17.5% from $18,721 to $64,200, 30% from $64,201 to $93,720, 33% from $93,721 to $216,000, and 39% above $216,001.
How is the ESCT rate threshold amount calculated?
For an employee who worked the full previous tax year (1 April to 31 March), the threshold amount is their total salary or wages plus the employer's total cash super contributions from that year. For a new employee, or one who did not work the full previous year, the employer estimates the current year's salary and contributions instead.
Does ESCT apply to my own KiwiSaver contributions?
No. ESCT only applies to the employer's cash contribution to KiwiSaver, not the employee's own contribution deducted from their pay. Employee contributions are deducted from after tax pay and are not subject to ESCT.
Is ESCT the same as PAYE?
No. PAYE is tax on an employee's wages or salary. ESCT is a separate tax specifically on employer superannuation contributions. Both are withheld and paid to Inland Revenue by the employer, but they apply to different types of payment and are calculated differently.
